Updated: Sep 25, 2021

Today with MINI to meet a few common succulent soil, see how many you know? Do you know what each of them does? And how they are proportioned?

1、Ceramsite --- characterized by air permeability, internal fine pore structure, put it in the bottom of the pot can replace the pot bottom stone (succulent pots are small, the general pot bottom stone is too big for), its gap is large, very suitable for drainage. The middle of the pot is mainly used for water retention when mixed with other soil. Putting it on the surface of the pot can be decorative and splash-proof. The size of the particles is used according to preference, generally the larger the bottom, the better. It is very hard and can be reused after turning the pot.

2、Maifan stone--- Maifan is a natural silicate mineral, which can stabilize, improve and balance the physical function of soil, activate, purify water and remove harmful substances in water, and contains many beneficial trace elements and minerals to provide long-lasting nutrients for succulent growth.

3、Green zeolite --- green zeolite belongs to a kind of ore material, a class of natural silica-aluminate ore will produce boiling phenomenon when burned, so named "zeolite". The green zeolite we commonly use is green just like its name.

Green zeolite is an aluminosilicate mineral that has the advantage of improving the soil and has adsorptive properties that improve the water and fertility retention of potting soil. The mineral comes with a variety of elements, active substances, and also controls harmful bacteria and viral substances in the soil. It is a very good succulent stone that can increase the disease resistance of plants. The color is also very nice, that's the advantage. But Because it is an irregular stone, sometimes the angles may hurt the roots of succulent plants.

4、Diatomite --- Diatomite is an excellent substrate component, its water absorption and water retention properties are better than vermiculite and perlite, with it as the base soil, water absorption, water retention and fertilizer retention capacity are stronger than other substrate formulations. The physiological and morphological indexes of the cultivated flowers are better and the roots are less likely to rot. It can also be used as a topsoil for succulents, Sedum, Lithospermum, etc., or used directly as a mixed granular slow-release fertilizer. And diatomaceous earth can also be used as a physical insecticide.

5、Pumice Soil --- Pumice soil is a good soil improvement material, which can improve the soil condition comprehensively and can promote plant growth effectively. It is suitable for the planting and cultivation of succulent plants. Because of its excellent water retention, drainage and heat preservation, it can be used as a potting stone, and can also be laid on the top layer of the soil. In the hot summer, they can also significantly reduce the temperature of the potting soil and help plants survive the summer. Pumice soil can be used alone or mixed with other media such as peat (pellets), leaf litter and akadama soil. Considering that succulents actually like a little acidic soil (acidic watering promotes succulent growth), it may be a good choice to add a small percentage of pumice soil to the soil mix.

6、Akadama --- The most versatile succulent soil known to gardeners. Features, expensive. The color is grayish yellow when dry, reddish brown after absorbing water, and it is easy to judge the soil moisture. It is a mineral soil. Akadama soil is a standard pavement for Ikebana, 12 and Viola due to its soft texture. Because of the thin skin of these types of succulents, they are easily scratched by hard objects and cause infections. akadama soil solves this pavement problem perfectly. In addition, terracotta mixes with soil, and it is good for the growth of Haworthia, because the root system of these succulents is very fragile.

7、Vermiculite --- Mica-like structure, it is actually also very easy to break off, water absorption will expand, characterized by water retention, extraordinary water retention. Because of its hollow structure so has a strong water retention and both permeability, good to keep the humidity of the planting environment, induce seed germination or plant rooting, for propagating leaf cuttings or seeding usually mixed with a large proportion of this vermiculite.

8、Coconut husk ---Coconut husk is a kind of pure natural organic matter that comes off in the process of processing coconut husk fiber

, water retention and aeration, very suitable for rooting. The most important thing is usually sold in compressed cake block, storage does not take up space, a small piece can soak out a large pile, used to replace peat soil as the main substrate of succulent soil, environmental protection and economic.

9、A2 Slow-release fertilizer - a very thin layer of hydrophobic material wrapped around the surface of the fertilizer particles made of film fertilizer, moisture can enter the porous semi-permeable membrane, dissolved nutrients diffuse outside the membrane and constantly supply the crop. That is, the rate of fertilizer nutrient release is adjusted to release nutrients according to crop demand. The dynamic balance between the intensity of elemental fertilizer supply and the physiological needs of the crop is achieved.

So you can do for cover stone are: Maifan stone,Green zeolite, Diatomite, Pumice , Akadama can choose according to preference.

And for succulent soil, mini generally use 6:3:1 way, that is, 6 of Coconut husk or burnings 6 garden soil, 3 of a variety of paving stones mixed (mini generally with Maifan, Vermiculite, Green zeolite, Lava stone, Pumice Soil,Akadama soil), 1 part of the slow-release fertilizer mix. The soil mixed in this way is rich in nutrients, permeable, fertility can be maintained for about 2 years, PH is acidic and suitable for succulent plants.

Of course, if you want to control various pests such as mealybugs and fungi, you can add pesticide and fungicide to the soil.
